Uli, also known as Muslihudiin Sharbinie, is a compassionate man from Bogor, Indonesia, who goes above and beyond to care for stray and feral cats in his community. Despite juggling three jobs to support his own family of a wife and five kids, Uli takes it upon himself to look after these cats, whom many locals view as pests.
In the past, some villagers resorted to harmful methods like poisoning or killing the cats to reduce their numbers. However, Uli and his team of volunteers, known as “angels,” are changing the narrative. Uli’s love and empathy for these animals stem from his grandparents, who were also kind to strays in the area. Through their efforts and Uli’s continued dedication, the community’s attitude towards the cats is shifting positively.
Though facing financial difficulties in caring for both his human and feline family, Uli continues to make a difference. In 2014, Kristin Connolly of Oxnard, California, stumbled upon Uli’s Facebook profile, intrigued by his evident love for cats. She reached out to him to offer help, and this marked the beginning of Uli’s Angels.
Together with other animal enthusiasts, they started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for constructing a shelter and providing medical attention to the cats. Thanks to the collective efforts, they managed to spay and neuter the cats in the area, preventing further overpopulation.
With the help of generous contributions from people around the world, Uli built a shelter from scratch and found recyclable materials and wood to create havens for the cats. Now, he can take kittens in need of medical assistance to the vet and provide a safe place for all the creatures seeking refuge with him.
Beyond providing care for the cats, Uli also focuses on raising awareness among his fellow villagers about the importance of showing love and compassion towards these animals. As a result, the behavior of the locals has changed positively, as they no longer abandon cats at dump yards or schools. Instead, they approach Uli to care for them.
